Reign makes her official costumed debut in Supergirl’s incredibly painful mid-season finale
Supergirl’s winter finale concluded with the fight of the year (and they didn’t even need Nazis!) After spending the episode struggling with her world-killer counterpart, Samantha (Odette Annable) finally officially suited up as Reign, complete with her own shirt rip. Her journey throughout the episode is painful, as she suffers from exhaustion and continually disappoints her daughter, Ruby, at Christmas. After beating Kara (Melissa Benoist) within an inch of her life, reducing Supergirl to a beaten, unconscious pulp, she returns home in time for Christmas morning. Only, when Ruby comes down to see what Santa brought, it’s not her mother waiting for her, it’s Reign.
While Samantha internally battles Reign, Kara continues to deal with heartbreak. Mon-el (Chris Wood) and his wife, Imra, are a pretty constant presence, and it’s really wearing on Supergirl. In one difficult-to-watch moment, Imra (Amy Jackson) pulls Kara aside and describes how much Mon-el loved her, emphasis on loved. Imra seems completely sincere, and means well, but it’s really hard on Kara.
On the happier romance front, Lena (Katie McGrath) and James (Mehcad Brooks) quickly became an item this episode. Although it seems rushed (they went from friends to crushing to kissing in less than fifty minutes) the relationship is cute enough, and seems to have potential.
Here to discuss Super-fights, heartache, and making it Reign is our Supergirl roundtable!

Adam (@abnormallyadam) – TV enthusiast, YouTube reactor and huge fanboy!
1. Let’s start with the title of the episode, Reign. Are you enjoying the world-killer as a villain so far?
Becca (@karadanverss): I AM SO MUCH LOVING REIGN. God, what a badass villain! I just love everything about Sam– and even though she is on the evil side now… I love her. Odette’s acting is incredible! I loved her changes between good Sam and evil Sam. Simply the best.
Mia (@dreaminofspace): Oh my god, Odette is KILLING it. I’ve never been this invested in a villain before. And last night’s fight scene… that was the most epic and heart-pounding fight scene we’ve ever had on Supergirl. Oh, and that cliffhanger with Sam and Ruby on Christmas Day, her fingers twitching and then her spinning around? Wow. So yes, it’s safe to say I’m enjoying Reign a lot so far!
Katie (@melszorel): I am liking Reign so far. and I really find it interesting that the ‘Sam’ part of ‘Reign’ is trying to hold on as much as she can. Even when Reign was killing people, it was because it was a gang. And then because Edge was trying to kill Lena. She’s killing all the bad people. Eventually, I think Reign will take over for good. That end scene with Ruby though, I think is still ‘Sam’. I absolutely love what they are doing with her character so far. And I’m really excited to see more. Odette is doing an amazing job.
Olivia (@atjogialove): I am. I think it’s interesting, especially because so much of the audience – myself included, has grown to love Sam, and because Sam doesn’t know herself what she’s doing. The fact that she can actually hurt Kara will be and interesting factor too.
Adam (@abnormallyadam): I am absolutely loving Reign as a villain. I think she’s my favourite in the show so far. It makes her story more emotional as we get to know more about Sam too.
2. James and Lena got close this episode. Is this a relationship you’re rooting for or one you could do without?
Becca: To be honest. I don’t really care much about them. I mean, if they’re together– GREAT! If they’re not together– GREAT TOO! They’re really not the big deal for me so I’m neutral. I do think they’re cute and sweet together and I can feel the tension between them so I think they’re okay. The scene with Sam and Kara telling Lena to go get him was adorable though.
Mia: Well, like I’ve said before: I don’t do shipping. It’s too messy and attracts people whose opinions on my morals I could really do without. That being said though, I’m cool with James and Lena. Whatever the writers want to do with them, I’m okay with it. It’s certainly an interesting dynamic: Clark Kent’s best friend and Lex Luthor’s sister. Imagine the wedding…
Katie: Let me start this off by saying that I liked James in season 1. But near the end, and then all of season 2, I didn’t like him anymore. I don’t think the writers know what they want to do with him. Guardian was all over last season. He was only in the crossover, to die, and then tonight his Guardian shield to save Lena, out of nowhere. My main issue with the pairing is that I think the writers are using them because A. They don’t know what else to do with James, and B. They don’t want people to ship Kara and Lena. And that is the main reason I’m not a fan of the pairing.
Olivia: Speaking just from this episode alone I think their chemistry was good and they were cute. I think there’s a lot of things that would need to be addressed from the past to make the relationship one I was 100% here for though. I have mixed feelings about it. They’re both characters I like so I’m not mad at the idea of them being together. But again I think things need to be addressed from the last episodes.
Adam: At the moment, I don’t hate it but I don’t love it either. They still have to grow on me as a couple. If the writers handle it properly, it could be something awesome.
3. The situation with Kara, Mon-el, and Imra is pretty messy at the moment. How do you foresee this storyline turning out?
Becca: I’m not a fan of this love triangle. I hate it. I think it’s unnecessary and I hate that the writers are doing this to Kara, again! On season 1 there was the Kara/James/Lucy love triangle… and now this? Ugh. But at the same time I understand why this is happening, I mean… it’s The CW! What’s a CW show without drama and angst for everything? I just hope this ends soon so I can have Karamel back together once and for all again.
Mia: So many theories, but no idea which one of them I believe the most. We know so very little yet. It hurts me a lot to see Kara in pain, it always does, I care about her so much. I can imagine in a future episode, the Legion’s ship will have been fixed and they are leaving to go back to the 31st century and Mon-El will have to choose whether to stay with Kara in present day or leave with Imra. No idea what he will choose if it comes to that.
Katie: I actually like the mess that is happening with all of them. That sounds weird to phrase it that way haha, but yeah. Imra seems really nice and genuine. When she was excited about meeting Kara and telling her that she essentially looks up to her, I thought that was really cute. I’m not sure how it’s going to end up. I just don’t like seeing Kara so emotionally hurt like this. It makes me really really sad.
Olivia: Honestly? I have a feeling the writers will drag it out but I don’t see Kara and Mon El getting back together any time soon- or at all to be honest- especially not with brainiac 5 coming on soon.
Adam: It’s hard because the way the story usually goes is that Mon-El would fall back in love with Kara and end it with Imra. But here, the situation is very different and anything could happen. Plus, I like Imra’s character so it’s frustrating for me lol.
4. There was a brief moment between Ruby and Alex tonight that had us wondering – do you think Alex may end up adopting Ruby after all this Reign-induced madness?
Becca: I do think Alex adopting Ruby can be possible. In fact, I didn’t think about it until now… and I can see it happening! Since Alex wants to be a mom so bad and I think Ruby will ended as an orphan soon… Alex taking care of Ruby would be the best and also the sweetest thing ever.
Mia: They do keep throwing in tiny little hints that this might be what will happen! If not adopting, maybe taking her in as a foster kid? I believe Alex will want to raise a child from infancy at point, but Ruby might be her first taste of motherhood. Poor Ruby is gonna go through a really tough time now.
Katie: I loved that little scene with Alex and Ruby, it warmed my heart! I’m starting to feel really bad for Ruby. You can tell how much she loves and believes in her mom. I think it would break her heart if she ever found out who she was. I almost teared up when Sam gave Ruby the House of El necklace. That being said, I think it would be amazing if Alex did end up adopting her because I think Alex would be a wonderful mom.
Olivia: Hmmm that wasn’t something I had thought of. I for one love Sam and would hate to see her go but I do think that could be a cool plot, or at least Alex taking a larger role in Ruby’s life as an “aunt”.
Adam: I never actually thought about this, but if anything were to happen to Sam, there’s a high possibility. If Reign takes over Sam completely, Alex might take her in temporarily until they can eventually save Sam. It would make for an interesting storyline though, so I’m down for it.
5. What was your favorite thing about this episode?
Becca: My favorite part was the Supergirl vs. Reign fight scene. Even though Reign won this battle… the fight sequence was amazing. From the beginning until the end. It was breathtaking. The effects, Kara bleeding, Reign’s speech… I loved it! Melissa and Odette’s acting was incredible and they deserve all the awards.
Mia: My favourite thing (as horrible as it sounds) was the fight and the cliffhanger. It was so achingly hard to watch Kara being crushed like that, but it was incredibly high quality action and directing, and it left a huge impact on me as a viewer. I cried real tears watching my favourite character of all times being bludgeoned to within an inch of death and subsequently watching Alex begging Kara to stay with her. Pain pain pain pain.
Katie: My favorite parts were all of Sam’s and Reign’s parts actually. And I loved the scene in Kara’s apartment where she, Kara and Lena were all talking about how much their friendships meant to each other.
Olivia: I hated HATED seeing Kara get hurt- but the fight scene was epic. Melissa and Odette played it out so well.
Adam: The fight between Supergirl and Reign. It was more intense than any battle I’ve seen on the show thus far. Having Reign almost completely kill Supergirl was an edge-of-your-seat moment and I had my eyes glued on the screen the entire time.
6. Which part of the episode could you have done without?
Becca: The scene where Mon-El and Imra were in the bar together and Kara saw them and then Mon-El cleaned Irma’s face in front of Kara. It was unnecessary and I wish the writers would stop making Kara suffer this way. Kara needs to be happy and seeing her like this destroys my heart.
Mia: Hmmm. I thought every part of the episode was good and needed, so I don’t have an answer for this. I’m not a “difficult” viewer, I’m usually happy with what I get.
Katie: I didn’t like Kara’s line where she told Lena, “I can see the chemistry you and James have.” I thought that was a line the writers came up with out of nowhere.
Olivia: Has to do with a certain couple that’s no longer together…
Adam: To be honest, probably the Lena/James kiss. It still would’ve been a great episode without it.
7. The finale certainly ended on a cliffhanger, with Kara/Supergirl unconscious and clinging to life. Obviously, Supergirl won’t die, but are you excited to see what happens next?
Becca: I will just say this: THE LEGION OF SUPERHEROES IS COMING!
Mia: Oh god, again, this scene killed me. It killed me. I am desperate to know what happens next (why must we wait 6 weeks?!). We got a hint in the short promotional trailer for 3×10, but still, I need more. My guess is 3×10 (Legion of Super-Heroes) will be an episode full of flashbacks to what happened with Mon-El after the season 2 finale, combined with Kara in a coma trying to come back to the surface. And again we will have the theme/common thread of “waking up” that we’ve seen a lot in season 3 making an appearance.
Katie: I think I almost had about 5 breakdowns during that fight with Supergirl and Reign. Not only has Kara finally found her ‘match’ but she has found someone that could potentially kill her, without kryptonite. It honestly scared me. I know she won’t die in the next episode. But now that there is a possibility that she can? I’m looking forward to the next episode after the hiatus! Can it be January already?!
Olivia: I am!! I think it’s gonna be crazy to see what’s going on- especially because in the trailer Kara said “I have to wake up” I’m wondering if there will be a dream sequence section of the episode kind of like the beginning of the season premiere.
Adam: I’m definitely excited for the next bunch of episodes. Obviously, Kara is safe but there might be repercussions that she has to deal with over the next episodes. I’m surprised she was injured this badly, so I was shocked. And the end with Ruby and Reign? Did something happen to Ruby?? I need answers right now! I hate waiting! Such a good cliffhanger though.
Final Verdict: Supergirl gives your worst holiday memories a run for their money!
What. A. Finale. We have no idea how we are going to survive until January to see what comes next. For one thing, Ruby has a literal supervillain in her living room on Christmas morning! Yikes! Not to mention, Kara is actually unconscious from being bludgeoned by Reign. It’s clear that the World-Killer is a threat unlike any Kara has faced before.
In times like these, it’s hard to even think about romance. But it would be remiss not to mention how utterly rushed Lena and James’s relationship seems. The last time we saw them, there was virtually no indication of their feelings for one another. At least Kara (who is technically James’s ex) has given the relationship her blessing, mentioning that she’s noticed the chemistry between the two. We aren’t sure we are seeing what Kara sees just yet, but with an open mind, we think this might just work.
When Supergirl returns, we will be properly introduced to the Legion of Superheroes. This storyline has been eagerly anticipated by so many fans, and we have total faith that the writing team will deliver an action-packed and entertaining storyline, especially after watching this mid-season finale!
