A new villain rises in the season 3 premiere episode of Shadowhunters
After a 7 month long hiatus, last Tuesday Shadowhunters finally came back. To say we were happy would be an understatement. The third season of Shadowhunters kicked off right where the story was left off on the season 2 finale. The new villain is properly introduced. We see Lilith (Anna Hopkins), the mother of all demons, more clearly after her introduction in the previous episode. It seems that she has a clear plan in her head and will not stop at anything to bring Sebastian back. And she is not alone. With the help of a masked being, she is recruiting “disciples” for something bigger, but we still don’t know what her full plan is yet. And after Clary (Katherine McNamara) kills one of them, we learn that Lilith is not worried, since she is planning on hunting more down. Guess we’ll have to wait to find out what her full plan is…
Throughout the episode, we see Jace (Dominic Sherwood) struggling, suffering from the aftermaths of being brought back from the dead. Clary, unaware of this, is debating herself whether it is a good idea to keep the secret between the two of them or not. After being marked by the Seelie Queen, Simon (Alberto Rosende) is released and was able to go back to Maia (Alisha Wainwright). Raphael goes to Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) for help, but later we find out that he lied to him and is doing some kind of experiments. Ollie keeps confronting Luke (Isaiah Mustafa) throughout the episode, and after they are both attacked, he decides to tell her the truth. Magnus and Alec (Matthew Daddario) finally realized that the best thing for their relationship is to always be honest with each other. So they share their concerns and thoughts on Magnus losing the title of the High Warlock of Brooklyn and Alec being offered a job in Idris.
There are so many things happening with our favorite characters, and it’s only the first episode. Let’s not waste any more time and start our discussion. Meet our guests for the first roundtable of season three:

1. We were properly introduced to Lilith, the new villain of the show played by the talented Anna Hopkins. What do you think she might bring to the show?
María (@shadowhuntersja): I have to say that despite knowing or sensing all the suffering that she will make our beloved characters go through, love her. But above all I adore Anna Hopkins playing the role. Regarding what this season will bring us, apart from all the darkness and new threats, I think there will be new challenges for everyone. I think she will take our characters to situations that will make them reach their limits, after all, Lilith is the Mother of all the Demons and has a power that they’d never confronted before. I also think that she’ll have some influence directly or indirectly with what Jace is going through, in fact I have a theory about it and we’ll see if it is fulfilled or not.
ShadowhuntersLA (@shadowhuntersla): Anna certainly gives a more mature, darker vibe to the show. Lilith is one of the big villains that we were waiting for and she nailed her performance to perfection. Lilith has that aristocracy, that ancient-all-mighty class only a Demon like her owns. And Anna makes you believe and almost feel Lilith’s immense power. The addition of Lilith to the show leveled up the game and raised the stakes. Which I believe is showing a more mature side of the show and making it step closer into the horror genre.
Emmanuelle (@shadowhunters_news): To begin with, Anna Hopkins brought it from the first second she was on screen. Her presence as Lilith is very powerful. I’m excited to see what she will bring as the big villain of the season. It should be interesting because for the past two seasons we have watched Valentine’s storyline develop by the brilliant Alan Van Sprang but having a new villain is like a fresh new start for a new season! What I hope for is that she will gives us something different from Valentine, a villain that we can almost feel for in a way. I’m also slightly excited to see what kind of obstacles she will place in the path of our main characters. Gotta love that angst!
ShumDario News (@shumdarionews): Lilith is definitely a much more sinister villain than we are used to on Shadowhunters and infinitely more powerful, being a greater demon and all. There’s no doubt that Valentine and Jonathan were villains, and rather effective ones too, but with how dark and eerie Lilith was, we couldn’t help but feel like they were just a glimmer of what evil lurks in the Shadow World. She was a woman of few words and yet in one episode she managed to get a possession and a murder done. She might be a lot of things but inefficient is not one of them, that’s for sure. With Valentine, they all knew who he was and what he was capable of, and he wasn’t quiet about his plans. Whereas with Lilith, we have no clue what she is planning aside from bringing Jonathan back.
Ana (@baneandlewis): After Valentine, I think Lilith is the type of villain the show needed. It is a big difference than what we were used to seeing with Valentine. She has a clear plan, not that Valentine didn’t had one. But the motives behind their plans are very different.
2. Alec still suspects that he doesn’t know the complete truth about what happened at the Lake. Are Clary and Jace doing the right thing by not sharing their secret with him?
María: I think they are right because they want to prevent Alec from being involved in all this. But on the other hand, I think it is a secret that will sooner or later come to light. And if I were Alec I would prefer to learn out about the suffering he is going through from my Parabatai than to find out in a bad way or when it might be too late to help him.
ShadowhuntersLA: Well this is a tricky matter. What happened at the Lake is something forbidden and the consequences are endless and terrible for everyone who was involved. Jace really wants to protect his parabatai from all the repercussions that may come. However keeping a secret has its consequences on its own so, it’s not much of a win-win situation.
Emmanuelle: That’s a topic I have often discussed with friends. Yes, it’s pretty bad that Jace would keep this away from his parabatai and brother. Early on in the episode, we heard Jace’s point of view and how he wants to keep Alec as far away from situations that could put his position as Head of the Institute in jeopardy. I’m pretty sure it’s not that there’s a lack of trust between Alec, Clary and Jace but more that each of them has the desire to protect one another in their own way.
ShumdarioNews: The fact that Jace is hell-bent on keeping their encounter with an angel a secret shows how important that whole event was. In the history of the show, we know that keeping secrets from others is not the best idea (we’re looking at you, Jocelyn) and the repercussions are always more than we think. Politically, it may have been the right call, but emotionally, it’s probably going to bring up a mixture of emotions. As Head of the New York Institute and also Jace’s parabatai, there will definitely be some backlash for Alec but he’s also a lot smarter than people give him credit for. Under his leadership, the shadowhunters of New York have done some pretty awesome things so here’s to hoping that it’ll work out!
Ana: It’s hard. One one side we have Jace not wanting to tell his Parabatai because it might but him in danger. But on the other, not telling anyone about it can only end badly for the both of them. If the Clave finds out by another source or in any other way, they could be in so much trouble. But then again, them going directly to the Clave can also be bad for them both, as Jace said.
3. We love the honesty between Magnus and Alec, it just shows how solid their relationship is getting. What type of challenges do you think the couple will go through in this new season?
María: Even though they cleared things up in this first episode, I think that Magnus’ concern about the New Great Warlock of Brooklyn will continue to be there, because Magnus can’t help worrying about his own kind. I also think that another thing that can affect their relationship is Magnus’ past. In particular I would say that the past related to who is Magnus’ Father, and something related to Magnus’ love life that could lead to Alec worrying about things. I don’t know if they’ll get to dive into the mortality-immortality problem but that would be another cause of troubles in their relationship. What I know for sure is that we’re going to enjoy (and perhaps suffer) a lot with the couple this season.
ShadowhuntersLA: Their relationship keeps growing and getting stronger. They still have a long way to go since there’s a lot of history they needs to unravel and memories they need to share with each other. Especially considering the fact that Magnus has been alive for quite a while. We know they’re at peace with the whole “I’m a Shadowhunter, you’re a Warlock” thing, but those differences will eventually show up and perhaps cause disruptions in their lives. I’m sure that as long as they continue thinking that communication is the key they will go through anything and succeed.
Emmanuelle: Of course I hope for not too many challenges but this is Shadowhunters so there will be some. For Season 3, I hope there are challenges that involve Alec and Magnus taking them on as a couple instead of challenges between each other (we’ve seen enough of that in Season 2). The arrival of Lorenzo next episode will be a big one, as well as the residual tension from the warlock siding with the Seelie Queen in the Season 2 finale.
ShumdarioNews: A lot of times, people forget how new their relationship is and some century-old habits like Magnus keeping to himself and afraid to let Alec see his vulnerability are not going to just disappear over a few weeks. This will definitely be a challenge especially since Magnus’ new rival, Lorenzo Rey, seems intent on keeping his new position safe. Some uncomfortable incidents from their past might come up for Magnus and threaten his relationship with Alec, possibly?
Ana: I think that no matter how solid your relationship is with someone, challenges are always going to get in the way. For now, I’m just happy that they both realized that honesty is the key to prevent most of these challenges. Living in the supernatural world they live in, I can say that you never know what might hit next. For now it is important that both of them know they have each other, and no matter what, they can know for a fact that they are never alone in facing these problems, no matter how complicated they might seem.
4. Simon got marked by the Seelie Queen. What could be the Queen’s purpose behind this?
María: Though I saw it coming from the promos I am still surprised by the change from books. I kind of like it because it gives a new and interesting plot to Seelie Queen. As for the purpose behind it, I believe that in the future she wants Simon to be her ally and with the help of the Mark of Cain she can turn him into a kind of weapon that protects her from any danger that might come to her and her people.
ShadowhuntersLA: I think she wants to use Simon as a weapon, perhaps against the Shadowhunters or the other Downworlders. We know she’s ancient and has ears everywhere so I’m pretty sure she knows about Lilith and is already planning something to protect herself and her kind. And that’s were Simon comes in.
Emmanuelle: Book fans and some show fans might recognize this as the Mark of Cain. The Queen seems to see Simon as her property, he’s valuable to her, and she wants to protect her property. This mark allows her to do so. To be honest, I’m not 100% sure about the whole Mark of Cain storyline yet and where the writers are going with it but I’m interested in seeing where it goes as the season progresses.
ShumdarioNews: We can never tell what the Seelies are planning, so it’s no surprise their Queen is just as ambiguous. The best guess we have is that she is trying to eliminate competition within the Shadow World. Since last season, her plan to have all the Downworlders on her side faltered, she might be trying something new. Essentially, by having Simon carry the Mark of Cain, it will make him stronger than the Vampire Clan’s current leader, Raphael. The Seelie Queen might be able to persuade Simon into joining her side as opposed to Raphael, who never trusted her in the first place. Who knows, maybe Raphael already knows about this as well, which is why we saw him being shady (no pun intended) towards the end of the episode.
Ana: The writers from the show just gave a complete different twist to this plot. As we know, in the books Clary is the one who marks Simon, as a way of protecting him from the evil he might face in the Shadow World. But now, seeing as the Seelie Queen is the one marking him, I think this is just part of a bigger plan she has in mind. The Queen always knows what she is doing, so I think we’ll have to keep an eye open for any signs that can point out her true motives.
5. Izzy is in a much better place in this season. What are your hopes for her in Season 3?
María: I hope that at last we have our badass Izzy. I really want to see what they have in store for her. I love that she is the new Weapons Master in the Institute. I like seeing her strong again and of course I love the way she loves candies, it reminds me of me. But I have to admit that I’m a little bit in the dark with Izzy this season. All can say is that I hope this is a new start for her and a better one. It’s time for Izzy to be happy
ShadowhuntersLA: You have no idea how happy and relieved I am to see Izzy being strong, badass and having an important role that allows her to explore all her abilities as the powerful Shadowhunters she is. She overcame so much and right now she’s going forward in her life, and I hope she continues her work in the Institute as the new Weapons Master and as a scientist. But also to finds relationship worthy of her, she does deserved happiness and true love.
Emmanuelle: I want to see Izzy being the strong shadowhunter we know she is. We haven’t seen much of “Warrior” Izzy in a while. I’m very happy with the addition of her being the Weapons Master of the Institute because that position is very important and seeing a woman in a job like that is a great influence for young women watching! This season I hope she’s more involved with the core characters because she was pretty separated from them in Season 2A and busy with Max and Sebastian in Season 2B.
ShumdarioNews: Izzy went through a lot last season what with the Yin Fen addiction and the confusing relationship she had with Raphael but things seem to be looking up for her! Being promoted to weapons master and attending the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, we see much of the Izzy in season 1. She had a lovely moment with a rather dashing doctor at the hospital so perhaps a potential love interest for her. But more than anything, we want to see Izzy back in action and kicking butt! Badass Izzy is definitely one of our favourite versions of Izzy.
Ana: Izzy has been through hell already. After having her addiction and then almost losing her little Brother, she just needs a break. Hopefully Season 3 can give us the Izzy we’ve been missing. Personally I want to see her involved in more fights and demon hunting and eventually falling in love. But I think for that she needs to be happy and regain the strength she lost in the past few days.
6. Luke finally decided to tell the truth to Ollie, confirming that he is a werewolf like she’s been suspecting. How is Ollie knowing about the Shadow World going to affect Luke and the group?
María: First of all, I loved them in the first episode. I think it’s better for her to know the truth than be around Luke always looking to know more about the Shadow World.Though by the curious nature of Ollie I would say that she will not be happy to know just what she knows now, I think we’ll see Ollie giving more problems to Luke and putting himself in danger in order to know more about Luke and everything around him. Who knows if things will end badly for her or if she will finally become a part of the world of the shadows…
ShadowhuntersLA: As Maia said: “Mundanes learning about the Shadow World never ends well” so I’m very worried about Ollie. The Downworlders are very close and strict in matters of keeping their world in the shadows. And a detective, curious mundane is no good for business. I truly hope she keeps her distance away or at least listens to Luke’s advice.
Emmanuelle: Letting a mundane into the Shadow World is never an easy process, as we were able to observe through Clary and Simon in Season 1. There could possibly be a lost of trust between Luke and the other pack members because of this, which will cause tension as usual. I’m sure Ollie and Luke’s storyline will be an interesting one to see play out, I’m even more excited because Ollie’s character is finally growing on me and I want to see more of her in future episodes.
ShumdarioNews: As we saw in the premiere, Ollie already puts herself in the crosshairs despite Luke’s warnings not to so it will be interesting to see how she would react to having her suspicions confirmed. Would it make her more reckless knowing that she has Luke on her side or would she be more cautious in her approach after facing off with the demon? Both are definitely possibilities but if we know Ollie according to what we’ve seen, it’s probably the former. Ollie doesn’t seem like one to back down in the face of adversity and we think she might be more involved in the Shadow World if anything. As Alpha of the New York pack and Ollie’s leader, it would definitely be more taxing for Luke who has always tried to keep his mundane life and supernatural lives separate. The lines would be blurred and he would no doubt have to enlist the help of the group to keep everything safe. Especially as we’ve seen Lilith has no problems with involving mundanes in whatever she has planned.
Ana: I like Ollie’s stubbornness. It is clever for the show to point out that not all mundanes are easy to persuade and lie to. And I like to think that if I were in her place, I would also not have given up into trying to get the truth out from Luke. That being said, I also think that jumping right in to this World is never easy. As we saw with Simon, it can end up pretty bad. So now more than ever Luke and Ollie will need to work better as a team. And maybe Luke will need to teach Ollie whatever he can in order to help her and illustrate the danger that comes with knowing about this whole new world and the life in it.
Final Verdict: The third season of Shadowhunters is off to a solid start. The new characters, promising storylines and darker tone tease why this season might be the best one yet
With every season premiere, Shadowhunters proves that they are willing to rise the bar higher than the last one. From the performances, the sets, and the new score, this season could easily be the best one yet. Season three seems to be giving us a more matured and dark version of the show. And what can we say? We are loving it. This is what we signed up for. With only one episode in we can’t wait to see what is in store for us in the upcoming episodes.
What would we love to see? We want more action, more of what makes the Shadowhunters the ultimate warriors they claim to be. Being a show surrounded by the supernatural and fiction, there are unlimited possibilities as to where the story can go. We already know they are not following the books completely. Which just means the possibilities are endless. And as we saw on this episode, the writers are not afraid to experiment and give us more surprises along the way. As it often happens, we were left with many questions after watching this episode. What is Raphael planning with that girl and why did he lied to Magnus? How is the mark going to affect Simon? What is Lilith planning with her disciples? Guess we have to keep tuning in to find out.
