Seamus comes calling, and it’s going to take the whole squad to outsmart him this time!
Brooklyn Nine-Nine 5×11 “The Favor” on FOX had all of us cringing in both annoyance and a slight sense of fear. Seamus is a pretty intimidating character. Not only have we been worried for Holt (Andre Braugher) since he agreed to the favor in the first place, but we just knew that wasn’t going to be the last time we heard from the criminal. Jake (Andy Samberg) and Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) are quick to jump in and help Holt deal with the man, but this one is going to require the entire squad. This gives us the awesome opportunity to see Amy (Melissa Fumero) and Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) come together in an awesome and epic team up!

Elsewhere in the precinct, Terry (Terry Crews) shuts down Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) when they object to Gina (Chelsea Peretti) using an empty office to pump. Unfortunately, our favorite assistant was playing the sergeant so she could get out of work without anyone noticing. But we had to forgive her since she was only doing it out of difficulty leaving her new baby. We love Gina as a mom! We even got to see a great bonding moment between Terry and Gina as they commiserate over what it’s like to be a working parent when all you want to do is stay home with your kids. This squad just knows how to hit us right in the heart. Also, Hitchcock and Scully had some creepy and intimate knowledge about breast pumps.
Let’s break it down with our roundtable guests of the week!
Christina (@OddlyUnromantic) – Massive obsessive fan of movies, TV, music, and YouTube.
Kaysi (@julietknope) – Trash for good television.
Aurora (@AurorasBlog) – Marathon runner and equity actress, currently running 882 miles for the 882 daily victims of assault for Project882!
Marilyn (@Marilyn72568293) – Cosmetologist and lover of fun! Enjoy watching the best shows I can find!
Pamela (@CharlesonPamela) – Teacher, aunt, and sister who also loves watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine!
1. Jake and Charles were dead set on infiltrating Seamus’ family through Kyle. Did you think it was a good plan?
Christina (@OddlyUnromantic): It was pretty clear that Jake loves The Godfather and knows it well. So it makes sense he would want to try out something like the movie. The plan was definitely not a very good idea. This being Jake and a comedy show, I knew the plan wasn’t going to work as soon as Jake mentioned The Godfather.
Kaysi (@julietknope): Yes and no. They obviously needed a way to get info on Seamus’ family, but because Kyle was a disaster, I was worried that it would backfire.
Aurora (@aurorasblog): It sounded like a good enough plan! I love how it was presented! The Godfather being the Diane Keaton movie still has me laughing!
Marilyn (@Marilyn72568293): It sure started out like a good plan, especially after seeing how clueless Kyle was. But then it became obvious that Kyle was a bit too clueless to be of much assistance.
Pamela (@CharlesonPamela): Even when Jake’s ideas seem foolproof, I just never trust them. This leaves room for me to be pleasantly surprised in the rare occasion that they work. But this wasn’t one of those times.
2. Terry pulls rank on Hitchcock and Scully over the empty office. Do you think he’s more understanding with Gina because he has a wife and kids?
Christina: Terry and Gina have a very interesting relationship. I think part of him giving Gina the room for herself was because he has a wife and kids and part of it was because they are friends.
Kaysi: Yeah, he understands the challenges that come with being a working parent and definitely would have more sympathy towards Gina because of that.
Aurora: Maybe. But I also think from a legal standpoint, even a normal human standpoint, you prioritize the breastfeeding mother over older guys who like to take mid-day naps. I know there are studies that say mid-day naps are good for you, so maybe in a perfect world, all parties get what they want. But still, you have to accommodate a breastfeeding mother.
Marilyn: Oh definitely! Everyone seems to always give Gina a bit more freedom than everyone else anyway. She doesn’t get in trouble for much! But I think it gave her and Terry another connection.
Pamela: Terry is so sensitive. He always has been. I don’t know if it mattered that Gina was a mom now. I think Terry just always gives his squad the benefit of the doubt. He loves them.
3. Amy seems pretty eager to team up with Rosa, even though they are pretty opposite on most things. Why did Amy want to work with her so badly?
Christina: Amy probably wanted to work with Rosa because Rosa is scary as hell and takes no one’s shit!
Kaysi: Amy, especially lately, has been trying to be less uptight and Rosa is known for being laid-back and cool. So my theory is she’s trying to see if she can learn a bit from Rosa.
Aurora: It’s possible Amy was overcompensating from what happened in the last episode. I know the force already made Rosa feel loved with game night, but maybe Amy just wanted to keep that momentum going.
Marilyn: Amy has always had a desire to be close to everyone on the squad. But I think she has always wanted to be closer to Rosa because of how close the woman is with Jake. Amy loves him and wants to get closer to Charles and Rosa for him.
Pamela: Amy clearly had trouble making friends as a kid. She’s smart and organized and extremely driven. I’m sure that made her an outcast growing up. I think Amy looks up to Rosa in a lot of ways and just want to learn a little from her. It’s cute.
4. Once again, Hitchcock and Scully shock us with their weird knowledge. How did they know so much about breast pumps?
Christina: Honestly, I don’t even want to know or think about how Scully and Hitchcock know so much about breast pumps!
Kaysi: I have absolutely no clue and I am more than okay with not knowing!
Aurora: I think they learn about anything that dares come between them and naps or them and food. It’s when they become their best detectives.
Marilyn: Their knowledge is scary. Terrifying. Honestly, they don’t very often know about things they should. But it constantly seems like they know a lot about things they really shouldn’t. Like, a lot.
Pamela: I have no idea. I don’t want to know. Scully seems to have a lot of random facts about a wide range of subjects. But Hitchcock knows almost everything about the creepiest things possible for him to know.
5. Amy goes to the source to beat the paperwork, but is disappointed by what she finds. Do you think she may rethink doing everything by the book because of her realizations this episode?
Christina: Amy rethink doing things by the book? Is the world ending?
Kaysi: Yeah, Amy’s claim that rules are pointless because she found out the woman who wrote the forms was not who she thought, definitely gives reason to assume Amy may be rethinking how she does things.
Aurora: That’s such a huge part of Amy, that while her inspiration may change, it would be hard for her personality to change as well.
Marilyn: Poor Amy! I hope she doesn’t, but she definitely seemed to have a little bit of an identity crisis after she met the cat lady. She was really excited to meet one of her idols. What a letdown!
Pamela: I thought it was hilarious! I think it may make her rethink being so uptight about some things. Paperwork isn’t always perfect and I think Amy really learned that with this case.
6. Rosa figures things out and helps Amy solve their permit problem. What did you think of their team up?
Christina: I love it to no end when Amy and Rosa team up because they’re so opposite. Rosa lets Amy blab on about paperwork and bureaucracy and also kindly, sharply, and bitingly makes fun of Amy when she nerds out. If I’m completely honest, I adore Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz so much as actresses and their characters, I go nuts whenever they pair up!
Kaysi: I really liked seeing those two work together! I hope we can see them team-up again soon.
Aurora: It was great! It’s always great to see teams of women. On B99 it’s great to see teams we don’t see often and I think theirs is one that hasn’t been explored a ton. Also, they’re both just individually great people with very different personalities and problem-solving skills. So, it made sense they’d work well together, and it was really fun to see!
Marilyn: I absolutely love it when we get to see Amy and Rosa team up! They are complete opposites, but they really work well together. It’s great comedy too! Especially when Rosa tries so hard not to get annoyed with Amy’s uptight ways.
Pamela: This is one of my all time favorite team ups that we get to see on this show! It comes in a close second to Jake and Amy, naturally. Opposites attract, and that’s one of the main reasons these two work so well together.
7. Seamus isn’t done with our squad yet and threatens to go after Holt’s family. Including Kevin. What do you think is going to happen next?
Christina: I have no idea how this whole thing with Seamus going after Holt’s family is going to play out! One of the many great things about B99 is that it is unpredictable.
Kaysi: I don’t know, Holt is going to have to go to great lengths to make sure Kevin and the rest of the precinct are protected. It’ll definitely be interesting to see how he gets through all of this. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Aurora: I am legitimately scared to find out.
Marilyn: Seamus better not hurt Kevin! I have a feeling that’s what is going to happen next, and I’m dreading it! I can’t believe this was the finale and now we have to wait for the show to come back to find out!
Pamela: I think Seamus is going to start going after the squad one by one until they take him down. I refuse to believe that he goes after Kevin. I love Kevin and would never want him to be hurt. Just think of how Holt would blame himself.
Final Verdict: Things are heating up at the 99, just in time for us to be forced to ice our heels in waiting!
Fall finales are a killer! The writing on this show has always been great, but it’s still continued to improve over the last five years. But somehow the writers are still able to surprise us! We’re going to be kept up at night wondering if something bad will happen to Kevin. It better not! It was a little predictable that Seamus wasn’t going to just go away after Hold did the favor for him. But the suspense came into play so effortlessly and the writers had us all on the edge of our seats. A place we’ll stay until we find out what Seamus’ next move is going to be.
The only thing we found a tad disappointing was a little of Gina’s storyline. We couldn’t be happier that she’s back, and she did tug on our heartstrings a bit when she expressed to Terry that she was missing her newborn. But we would have liked the squad to have been as excited as we were to have her back. Everyone just seemed to go back to normal and acted as if Gina had never left.
Waiting sucks. Especially when we have so much to look forward to! There is the wedding of Amy and Jake, but there’s also all of the exciting things that will come with it. We can’t wait to see what the bachelor and bachelorette parties look like! We can’t wait to see what kind of antics the squad pulls! Plus, we’re all here together and waiting with the same amount of anticipation and impatience. So at least we all have each other!
